The Granary is directly north of the house. Its design and structure is the same as the house, with the doorway facing south.

As its name implies, the Granary stored harvested grain. Cured meats were buried in the grain in the fall when the weather turned cold. During the winter the family would uncover ham, sausage and bacon as it was needed.

Inside, a grain chute was fashioned out of a stovepipe and a cut-off milk pail. This is one of the many examples of Frank Hutmacher’s ability to fashion functional items out of whatever materials were at hand. Grain was shoveled into a hole in the roof and the grain chute was used to direct it into place.

The building also stored other staples such as coffee, flour and sugar, purchased in sufficient quantities to last the winter.

Wires attached to the Granary rafters were used to hang sausages as they cured.
