The Barn
The barn is south of the house.
Of all the buildings on the site, this is in the worst condition.
The barn housed milk cows and stored hay and grain.
Like keeping chickens, milking cows were a key part of the farming operation, producing milk and cream for food.
Cream along with the eggs were sold for cash to provide a source of income.
On the Hutmacher farm, milking cows was delegated to children. As soon as they were old enough, it became part of their daily chores.
