Like the other structures on the farm, the root cellar was constructed of stone and mud.
It was different in that the walls were underground and the roof was flush with the surface of the land.
The root cellar provided cool storage for potatoes and canned goods.
The Hutmacher children dreaded the task of getting something from the root cellar because it was a dark and scary place where they might encounter a snake.
For many years, the road in front of the house ran further to the east, and curved south of the Hutmacher farm.
The original root cellar was located near the culvert on the current road. The root cellar was moved to it present location as part of the road relocation.
