Coal stoves used for cooking and heating the Hutmacher home needed to be vented to the outside, and given that the roof was mostly branches and straw, proper venting was a great concern.
Chimney construction started with building a platform about 5 feet off the ground. The platform was supported by 2 inch diameter poles. A stone chimney was built on the platform using the same techniques used to build the walls.
An opening near the base of the chimney allowed the stove pipe from the stove or heater to vent into the chimney. The stonework extended through the branches and straw layers on the exterior of the roof.
Mud was built up around the stonework to form a distinctive beehive chimney.
